Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult : : Medium
On 8/31, after being abandoned on a busy highway, Billy Joe was hit by a car that kept going. A teenager witnssed it and stopped to find Billy bleeding profusely. He flagged for help but the only person to stop was a Proverbs volunteer. She scooped up Billy (and his beagle companion) and took him to the nearest hospital. Even in great pain, Billy Joe wagged his tail for the folks trying to save his life. His right front leg was so injured it required amputation. His left pelvis was fractured but able to heal on it's own. All his internal organs were bruised. He spent two weeks at the vet's office recovering. He needed help to walk the first week but adjusted quickly to using 3 legs. He became a favorite of the vet's staff who kept him in the reception area while there. When he came to his foster home, he immediately taught himself to climb on the sofa and play with the other dogs. He is friendly with everyone. He runs, plays tug of war and seeks affection all the time. He's housebroken and doesn't chew. His playmates range in size from 12 lbs. to 100 lbs. Based on his teeth, he's probably just a year old. He weighed 41 lbs. before his leg was amputated. He seems to be a mix of cattle dog and possibly dalmation due to spots he has. He doesn't realize he has a handicap. He would make a great therapy dog because he is bright and loves clicker training. Other Pictures of Billy Joe (BJ) (click to see larger version):
